American Heart Association – Sleep Added to Life’s Essential Eight

Published on December 17, 2025

In 2022 The American Heart Association added healthy sleep to their lives eight essential 8 recommendations1. Sleep is a foundational element of human biology and a requirement for life. However, one in three adults do not get enough sleep. Poor sleep puts people at risk of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive decline, dementia, depression, diabetes, high blood sugar, infections and obesity2. The American Heart Association recommends adults get 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each day. Kids and teens need more depending on age. The benefits of sleep include increased mood and energy, healthy repair of cells and tissues and blood vessels, more creativity and productivity, improved mood and energy, better brain function, better ability to build muscle, less risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension and decreased risk of heart attack and stroke3.

To get the healthy sleep the American Heart Association recommends having a sleep routine, going to sleep at the same time each day, reading before bedtime, being physically active each day and winding down tech free before bedtime3.
